Commercial Landscape Design - Design Brief:
The client was the NSW office of the RSPCA and its central facility located on one of Sydney’s busiest connecting roads. The inspiration for this design came from what are referred to as the 5 Freedoms of the RSPCA which are an animal’s right to:
1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
2. Freedom from discomfort
3. Freedom from pain, injury and disease
4. Freedom to express normal behaviour
5. Freedom from fear and distress
The design needed to be a bold statement encapsulating a sense of fun and calm while still honouring the serious commitment to the 5 Freedoms. Water was selected as a key theme to visually represent this ‘ever flowing’ and reciprocal commitment from the stakeholders to the organisation, and from the organisation to the stakeholders.
The Dog Bowl Water Feature
The design for the giant dog bowl acts not only as a fun statement piece, but also as a ‘wishing well’ where people can reflect and throw donation coins into the water. Roger Apte sculpted this feature of the design.
