Darby St, Newcastle
Design Brief:
This project resulted in the transformation of a vacant lot on busy Darby Street Newcastle into a vibrant and lush garden and community place.
Locals revel in the opportunity to garden and share in the natural bounty on offer. The brief incorporated engaging and intelligent design elements that would spark curiosity and a desire to explore and participate. These included the construction of a towering and stunning arbor at the entrance to the garden. This was designed to attract attention and frame the site perfectly within the streetscape.
The arbor was constructed from reclaimed materials from an iconic local site and local reclaimed railway sleepers were used for the garden beds.
The local community was involved in determining the planting making it their own, achieving integration and accepted ownership.
The design and creation of a tranquil and lush garden sanctuary, loved by the local community and engage passers by, has transformed a dilapidated and uninspired community space into a community place where people can come together.
